The City of Sydney Council has set aside $180 million in its long-term financial plan to transform George Street into Sydney's premier retail and pedestrian street.
The NSW Government’s announcement of George Street as the preferred route for a light rail extension into the city brings that vision one step closer.
Light rail is expected to ease bus and traffic congestion, relieve crowded footpaths, and enable the creation of new pedestrian spaces in the heart of Sydney. The plan is to pedestrianise sections of George Street between Bathurst and Hunter Street.
The City Council will fund street trees, lighting, high quality paving, drainage and public art while work closely with business, retailers and the community to ensure that the transformation is both visionary and practical.
